Reading can dramatically expand a child’s vocabulary and hone skills in phonics and blending. You can help by playing some fun games with your young readers.

Game #1: Matching Pairs
First you need to choose some words that are familiar but distinctive. Words like “sister”, “brother” or “dark” could be good choices and are easily sounded out phonetically. Write each of the words you have chosen on a plain white card made of heavy weight white paper. Depending on the size of your class you may want to break down the matching sets of words into several small sub-sets. Take six to eight of the matching card-three to four pairs-and lay them out face down, allowing one child at a time to choose two cards. If they match, the child takes them back to the desk and if not the next child gets a turn. Once every child has a matching pair of cards, have them draw a picture of what the word describes. This is very fun for children and they get to enjoy competition without anyone being left out.
Another variation is to choose words that rhyme. “Dark” and “park”, “brother” and “other”, “hat” and “cat”, and so on. This will encourage rhyming skills as well as common word recognition that is important to improve reading speed for their later years.
Game #2: Go Fish
“Go Fish” is another fun game that can encourage vocabulary, word recognition and visual skills. Again, print matching words on index cards or white cardboard until you have a dozen or more matching pairs. You can divide the children into groups of three or four and hand each group a “deck” of cards. Each child is dealt five cards with the remainder placed in the middle of the floor or table where they are sitting. They then take turns asking another child in the group if they have a match for one of their words. If no, the child must draw a card from the pile in the middle of the group. If he gets a match it is placed face up on the playing surface. When a child has emptied their hand of cards, you have a winner. This is also effective with rhyming pairs.
The “Go Fish” game can be used for older readers, too, using more advanced words or even homonyms like “dear” and “deer”.
Game #3: Old Maid
Another fun word game is “Old Maid”. Again you can divide the children into groups. Matched word pairs are shuffled and dealt to the children with none remaining. There will be one word card without a match. The players then take turns drawing a card from the player on their right and as they get matches they pronounce the word then lay the cards down on the playing surface. The player that ends up with the unmatched card is the winner. Again, this game can be used for more advanced readers who can ask the other players to spell the words they have matched before they lay down the pair. You can use words that rhyme, words that are opposites or homonyms for older readers.
