Reading aloud to your students is a very good way to get them excited about reading. It can be fun, educational and most of all it is interesting to your students.

It’s all in the finger!

If you have not thought to have the children follow the words with their finger, this is a good strategy to train their young eyes to travel from left to right and follow the flow of sentences. Don’t worry about instilling a “bad” habit; children don’t use their finger to follow the words for very long, as their eyes will take over that task very soon. Children tend to imitate the people they look up to and most adults don’t use their fingers to read.

Choose carefully

Choose a book that is interesting to your class or your child. This is usually something about the everyday life of a fictional boy or girl. Choosing a book that is different from their own surroundings will make it more interesting. If your young reader lives in the city they will find a book about a child doing chores on a farm more interesting than one about a city child.

Covers Come First

When your class has copies of the books, discuss the cover first. It should be colorful, tell the reader what the book is about and pique their interest. If it is about a farm, for example, it might show a child feeding hay to a cow or drawing water from a well. The children can see that the picture on the cover is described by the title and associate words with pictures. This is important, beginning a process in which the children will be able to picture scenes in their minds when they read books without illustrations. Without this wonderful ability-which you can teach-reading is not fun.

Select passages

Pick out a few passages before the reading so that you can allow the children to discuss them and relate to them personally. If the book describes a character waking up in the morning, let the class tell you what they do when they first awaken. You and the rest of the children will enjoy hearing all the different ways the class begins their morning! If the character in the book begins his or her chores, ask your class what chores they are responsible for and let them share. This allows them to identify with the child in the book and makes them eager to be able to read better.

Discuss, Discuss, discuss

After you’ve read the book aloud and the children have followed along, begin a discussion about the story. What would your class have done differently? What was their favorite part of the book and why did they like it so much? Could they do the same things that the character in the book did-or would they even want to?

Reading is an adventure, and these techniques will make children eager for more!
